The way we think about products is changing. For decades, the dominant model was straightforward: buy, use, dispose, replace. But as the environmental and economic costs of that cycle have become impossible to ignore, a better model is gaining ground, one built on longevity, repairability, and the responsible use of resources. That model is known as the circular economy.

As part of our contribution to that shift, and in upholding our commitment to sustainability, we have introduced spares kits for our iCON fan products. It is our way of demonstrating that doing right by our customers and doing right by our planet go hand in hand.

 

The Environmental Case for Spares Kits

1. Extending the Life of Your Fan

Every piece of electrical equipment has components that wear over time. In a linear model, this wear becomes a trigger for replacement, often of an entire unit that is otherwise perfectly functional. This is wasteful in every sense: financially for the customer, and materially for the environment.

Airflow spare kits are designed to address this challenge by enabling targeted repairs rather than complete product replacement. By supplying the components most likely to require attention over a product's working life, we enable our customers to carry out timely maintenance, restore peak performance, and continue using equipment that has years of reliable service left in it. This approach not only makes environmental sense, but also practical and economic sense for our customers.

2. Reducing the Environmental Cost of Manufacturing

Manufacturing a new fan is resource intensive. It requires the extraction and processing of raw materials across its sub-assemblies, together with the associated energy consumption and carbon emissions from transportation and distribution.

Spares kits, which represent only a fraction of the material mass of the complete unit, directly address this issue. Component-level intervention, rather than whole-unit disposal, can successfully extend a fan’s service life by several years while avoiding the embodied carbon associated with manufacturing a replacement unit.

3. Minimising Waste

Products that cannot be repaired inevitably become waste, often sooner than they should. In many sectors, that waste is difficult and costly to process, with components more likely ending up in landfill than being recovered or recycled.

By making repair straightforward and accessible through our spares kits, we help keep our products out of the waste stream and extend their service life.

Moreover, wherever possible, we recover serviceable components such as screws and washers from returned products and subject them to rigorous quality checks before reintroducing them as spare parts within our kits. This helps close the loop at a material level, keeping valuable components in circulation while maintaining the performance and reliability our customers expect.

4. Energy Efficiency Over Service Life

A fan operating with poorly maintained components consumes more energy per unit of airflow delivered than a well-maintained equivalent. This efficiency deficit, compounded over years of continuous operation, represents a material addition to the carbon footprint of the fan’s use phase.

Restoring the fan to its specified mechanical condition through component-level repair and maintenance helps restore its designed efficiency, reducing energy consumption for the remainder of its service life.
